Johnnie Bernhard's third novel, Sisters of the Undertow, demonstrates the author is fast becoming a frontrunner in complex family drama. I enjoyed this book, perhaps because I'm British but live in the US, and perhaps because I'm interested in the wars that shaped the last century. My personal experience with Military Sexual Trauma compels me to share my journey in a mission of caution and comfort to those serving in our military. I loved this one. Instead, this book gave enough detail to make me love and enjoy the characters, yet kept moving at a rapid pace. I thought the descriptions of his inner conflicts after leaving behind a brief marriage to join the navy, as well as the way the naval Gallipoli campaign was portrayed were excellent. Great descriptive language. The story stayed with me long after I finished reading the book. I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the sense of menace and tension that builds throughout the novel leading up to its climactic ending. Undertow is my first book. It also is not a quick or easy read requiring little thought or mental involvement. While not my favorite book I've read this year it kept my interest (at least most of the time).
