Representatives of Ukrainian NGOs dealing with consumer rights protection issues, together with experts of Ukrainian Center of Mediation investigated mediation procedures

  • Nowadays, mediation is a very popular method of dispute resolution all over the world, but in Ukraine not many people refer to the dispute resolution with the help of mediation. The joint EU-UNDP project "Consumer Society and Citizen Networks" decided to introduce mediation as a way of consumer conflict resolution to the representatives of Ukrainian consumer NGOs.

"Mediation is a dispute resolution method in which an intermediary (mediator) helps the parties to a conflict establish a communication process and analyze the conflict situation in a way that allows them to make a decision on their own that will satisfy their interests and needs. In contrast to a formal judicial or arbitration procedure, the parties reach an agreement voluntarily during mediation - the mediator doesn't make a decision for them" - assured Galyna Yeromenko, Head of the Ukrainian Mediation Center

The series of trainings on mediation were conducted by the CSCN project in partnership with Ukrainian Mediation Center which was set up under the auspices of the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School. During the trainings, the participants got acquainted with phases of mediation and skills that are necessary for mediator, extended their knowledge in the mediation procedures and perfected their mediators' skills. As a result, the representatives of Ukrainian consumer NGOs received certificates from Kyiv-Mohyla Business School for successful completion of the training on mediation as a way of consumer dispute resolutions.

Mediation may become an effective instrument of consumer conflict resolution. In comparison with judicial procedures, resolving disputes through mediation does not take much time and can substantially reduce costs for the parties. The goal of mediation is to arrive at a resolution that satisfies both parties which makes mediation a question of present interest for Ukrainian consumer NGOs." - stated Raisa Panasyuk, the participant of the training and member of Vinnitsa regional civil society organization for people with special needs "Harmony".
